چکیده

SANCHEZ, A. and WU, W., 2011. A Non-Equilibrium Sediment Transport Model for Coastal Inlets and Navigation Channels. In: Roberts, T.M., Rosati, J.D., and Wang, P., (eds.), Proceedings, Symposium to Honor Dr. Nicholas C. Kraus, Journal of Coastal Research, Special Issue, No. 59, pp. 39-48. West Palm Beach (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208. This paper presents a depth-averaged sediment transport model with emphasis on morphodynamic processes near coastal inlets and navigation channels. The model solves the depth-averaged two-dimensional non-equilibrium transport equation of total-load sediment, considering bed-material hiding and exposure, avalanching and sediment transport over hard bottoms. The model is coupled with a depth-averaged circulation model and a spectral wave transformation model. Predicted bed changes are compared with measurements for two laboratory experiments of channel infilling and in a field study at Shinnecock Inlet, Long Island, NY. The results indicate that the model is capable of predicting the general trends of morphology change and provides a useful tool for engineering applications such as coastal sediment management, navigation channel maintenance, and beach erosion protection. ADDITIONAL INDEX WORDS: Sediment transport, coastal inlet, channel infilling, finite volume, numerical model.

An Implicit 2-d Depth-averaged Finite-volume Model of Flow and Sediment Transport in Coastal Waters

An implicit depth-averaged 2-D finite volume model has been developed to simulate sediment transport and bed morphological changes under actions of currents and waves near coastal inlets. The model computes the depthaveraged 2-D shallow water flow and non-equilibrium transport of total-load sediment, accounting for the effects of wave radiation stresses and turbulent diffusion induced by curren...

Numerical Analysis of Sediment Transport in Sewer Pipe

The efficiency and economical performance of sewer systems is an essential issue in urban drainage. The need for sewers to carry sediment has been recognized for many years. One of the main problems in designing sewerage systems is the sediment deposition. Sedimentation in sewers occurs regularly according to the alternating natural flow. The present study investigates the hydraulic characteris...

A Comparative Study of Extreme Learning Machines and Support Vector Machines in Prediction of Sediment Transport in Open Channels

The limiting velocity in open channels to prevent long-term sedimentation is predicted in this paper using a powerful soft computing technique known as Extreme Learning Machines (ELM). The ELM is a single Layer Feed-forward Neural Network (SLFNN) with a high level of training speed. The dimensionless parameter of limiting velocity which is known as the densimetric Froude number (Fr) is predicte...

Sandbar Migration Due to Cross-Shore Sediment Transport; A Case Study of Noshahr Coasts, Iran

Cross-shore sediment transport is one of the effective factors in erosion and sedimentation, and affects dynamics of the beach profile in coastal areas. Furthermore, sandbar migration due to cross-shore sediment transport mostly effects beach nourishment, displacement of pollutions trapped in sediments, and organism and plants’ lives.  In this manuscript, sandbar migration due to cro...
